I fell in love with ballet at age 4 and danced for nearly two decades before life took me in a new direction. But I couldn't stay away from the studio for long. In 1996, I qualified as a ballet teacher and began working as an assistant in Saxonwold, rediscovering my passion—this time from the other side of the barre.
By 2001, I was ready to create something of my own. I opened Charmaine's School of Ballet in Mondeor, and for over 20 years, this studio has been where I've watched countless children discover their strength, grace, and confidence through dance. Teaching isn't just my profession - it's where I belong.
Every child who walks into my studio is different. Some are naturally graceful; others need time to find their balance. Some dream of the stage; others just love to move. My job isn't to fit them into a mould - it's to see who they are and help them grow from there.
Ballet teaches discipline, yes, but it also teaches resilience when a step doesn't come easily, focus when distractions abound, and the courage to perform in front of others. These lessons stay with students long after they leave the studio and that's what makes this work meaningful.
The Royal Academy of Dance provides a framework I trust - one that's been refined over a century and is used by teachers in more than 80 countries. It gives me a clear, progressive syllabus while leaving room for the individual attention each student needs. My RAD accreditation also means I'm held to professional standards and committed to ongoing training, so I'm always learning better ways to teach.
At Charmaine’s School of Ballet, we provide a warm, welcoming, and multicultural environment. Students learn alongside peers from diverse backgrounds, building respect, confidence, and lifelong friendships. Our dedicated studio features a sprung wooden floor, mirrors, and a comfortable waiting area, creating the perfect space for focused learning.
If you're looking for a place where your child will be truly seen, challenged at their own level, and encouraged to grow, I'd love to meet you. Come see the studio, watch a class, and let's talk about what ballet could offer your child.
Even with multiple students, I see each child individually. I remember who's working on their turnout, who needs confidence before an exam, whose balance has improved. This personalised awareness shapes how I teach every combination.
Every child's body is different - different proportions, different flexibility, different strengths. I adjust my corrections and expectations accordingly, teaching safe, effective technique that works for each unique dancer.
I believe parents should understand their child's progress, what we're working on, and what they can do to support at home. I'm always available to discuss your child's development - the conversation doesn't end when class does.
Some children arrive naturally musical and graceful. Others need time to develop coordination. I don't compare students to each other. I help each one become the best version of themselves.
Ballet requires discipline, but it should never feel punishing. I maintain high standards while keeping classes enjoyable. Students should leave feeling accomplished and eager to return, not defeated or anxious.
I notice when a usually energetic student seems withdrawn, or when a struggling dancer suddenly breaks through. I'm not just teaching ballet - I'm supporting children through their developmental years, and that requires attention to more than just their pliés.
Students dance best when they feel safe to try, fail, and try again. Creating that environment of trust, where mistakes are learning opportunities, not sources of shame, is fundamental to everything I do.
