Exams, Eisteddfods & Concerts

RAD Examinations

RAD exams are optional formal assessments where students demonstrate their technique, musicality, coordination, and performance quality to an external examiner. These internationally recognised qualifications provide:

  • Clear goals to work toward throughout the year
  • Official feedback on progress and areas for development
  • Certificates and a sense of achievement
  • Valuable experience performing under observation

Who takes exams?
I invite students when I feel they're technically ready and would benefit from the experience. Not every student takes exams every year, and that's perfectly fine. Some dancers thrive on the structure and goals exams provide; others prefer to simply enjoy classes without the formal assessment.

When do they happen?
Junior examinations (Pre-Primary through Grade 5) typically occur mid-year. Senior examinations (Grades 6+ and vocational levels) usually take place later in the year. Specific dates are confirmed with enrolled families well in advance.

What's involved?
Exam fees vary by level. Students attend their regular classes leading up to the exams and additional rehearsals are normally required to get them ready.

Essence of Dance Eisteddfod

We participate in the Essence of Dance Eisteddfod in Alberton

every second year, during the October school holiday - a competitive festival where students perform solos, duets, or group pieces for adjudicators and an audience.

What is an eisteddfod?
Think of it as a performance competition where dancers receive scores and written feedback from qualified judges. It's not just about winning - it's about the experience of performing, receiving constructive critique, and celebrating everyone's efforts.

Who participates?
All students participate in a group dance at the eisteddfod. I select some students based on their readiness to also perform solos.

What to expect:

  • Entry fees: approximately R300 per performance (depending on category)
  • Costume costs: varies by piece, typically R800
  • Rehearsals: several additional practices in the weeks leading up to the event

It's always a highlight - the energy, the nerves, the applause, and the pride when students walk off stage knowing they gave their best.

Studio Concert

The studio hosts a concert every second year. This is a joyful celebration where every enrolled student takes the stage. It is not a competition—it's a showcase of what we've worked on during that year, performed for family and friends in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.

When and where?
Usually held in September at a local venue. Specific details (date, venue, ticket information) are shared with families mid-year so you can save the date.

What's involved?

  • We use the same costumes that were made for the Eisteddfod
  • Extra rehearsals: a few additional sessions in the weeks before the concert
  • Tickets: family and friends purchase tickets to attend (typically R50–R80 per person)

This is genuinely a highlight for students and families alike. There's something magical about watching your child perform on stage, surrounded by their dance friends, in front of people who love them. It's less about perfection and more about celebration.

Is participation required?
Yes, the concert is a key part of our studio culture and everyone participates.
